Canadian Arts Funding Catch-22
Le Devoir has been tracking the fallout from our government’s decision last fall to cut two relatively cheap programs which allowed performing groups, filmmakers and others in the arts to travel abroad to promote their work. Those cuts came into effect as of April 1st.
Now, in one of those moments of perfect political irony, Ottawa is hosting a thirteen day arts festival showcasing performing artists from British Columbia, providing $2 million in federal funding – and shelling out $250,000 to bring in “producers, buyers and talent scouts” from all over the world in the hopes that they will offer contracts to our performers to come play in their country.
Spot the paradox yet?
